Vote If You Want... Or Not
This election cycle has been a complete shit show. I’ve talked to you once about voting and I’ll admit that I’ve changed my mind and my opinion on the matter. Before, I said that voting was a choice of choosing between the bad and the worse and it was our duty to make the decision. Well, I lied. Since then, I’ve realized that all of that is bullshit. We talk about the flaws of the two party system, yet we continue to feed the monster. Why?
Truth of the matter is that most people have been conditioned and scared into thinking that they must ride or die for the popular groups. Moreover, they don’t have the education needed to realize that there are more than one option. Don’t get me wrong, even if we have five well known people running for the presidency, there still won’t be a “perfect” candidate. However, this system of choosing to die slow and painful or quick and swift won’t be so heavy.
I think I also said some bullshit about not having the right to complain if you don’t vote. I don’t completely disagree with that notion, but my views on the subject have shifted a bit. If you’re not going to research and make educated decisions at the local level elections, you should really ask yourself, “What am I going to do to ensure I’m bettering my community in other ways?” Because in reality, those elections mean the most. I live in chicago and there were some major decisions on the ballot in regards to funding and “improvements” for the city. Those things kinda matter… a lot. Now, this dumb ass presidential race… girl, this shit is setup by the man. Don’t spend too much time tossing and turning over that shit.
More than anything, I’ve decided that fear won’t make me vote for a president that I don’t want to vote for. On both sides, Democratic and Republican, they are using scare tactics to gain votes for themselves. That’s cool, but I don’t have to respond or feed into it. In the last mayoral election in Chicago, I submitted a “no vote” because I honestly didn’t know who I wanted to give my vote to. Looking back, I have no regrets. We still have the same rotten ass mayor and he’s still up to no good. I’m at peace because I didn't allow anyone to “punk” me into voting for them.
As for Black folk... vote if you want. I thought about not voting all together, but I couldn’t bring myself to stay home. I knew that there were more people on the ballot than “Thing 1” and “Thing 2” so, I went out and stood in line for an hour and a half to vote. However, I’ve changed my tune a bit about Blacks voting. Our ancestors died to give us the right to choose if we wanted to vote. And staying home is your right. Moreover, it’s not too often that elected officials do anything special for our Black asses anyway. Our issues expand beyond policies and law. Our issue comes from the blatant hate within certain people’s heart. It’s going to take more than an election to change that. Honestly, most people feel as if it doesn’t matter what they choose, America will still use us as slaves for their private prisons and they will continue benefit off the system that enslaves Black people. So, I get it. I wish we felt like there was really someone, something, or some process that would actually make a realistic change for us.
As for Bernie telling folk that this isn’t the time for a protest vote, girl… you have some nerve. For many people, voting “Bernie Sanders” was an actual protest vote. They went against party lines to vote for your old ass. Although Hillary’s lying ass was the golden child that many people thought they had to pick, most people fought the system and voted for you, so miss me with that bullshit.
As for Obama, I’m just going to listen to what you said about Hillary back in the day when you told us not to trust her ass.
Moral of it all, is to do what you want. However, be aware that there are more things on the ballot than the major things you see on the news. Go and research your judges and local representatives. Those people will impact your daily lives quicker than the President. And if you’re Black and you’re just feeling weary about the whole shit… I understand.
I’ve already done my voting… I didn’t vote for Hillary or Trump.
